A monumental sculpture of a dying lion carved into natural rock in 1820, dedicated to the Swiss Guards who perished during the French Revolution in 1792. Mark Twain called this monument 'the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world'. It is surrounded by a small pond and parkland.
Free access, open throughout the year. In the immediate vicinity is the Glacier Museum, which can be combined with a visit.
