Opened in 1891 on the site of an older theatre that burned down, the Zurich Opera House is one of Europe's leading opera houses, with a repertoire of over 300 premieres throughout its history. The neo-baroque facade with Ionic columns and gilded details dominates the Bellevue lakefront, while the 1,100-seat auditorium retains its original 19th-century decoration of red velvet and gold. In 1937, the world premiere of Berg's opera 'Lulu', completed posthumously, was held here — one of the defining musical events of the 20th century.
