Alpbach is a small Tyrolean village frequently cited as one of the most beautiful in Austria. Its distinctive wooden houses adorned with flowers on the balconies are also a result of a 1953 building regulation requiring all construction to follow the traditional timber style. The village is first mentioned in records from 1240, and since 1945 has been home to the European Forum, an annual gathering of figures from academia, business, and politics. In winter it forms part of the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, while in summer it serves as a starting point for hiking and for the cable car up to Wiedersbergerhorn.

An acid-set cheese made without rennet, with protected designation of origin at the Tyrolean level. It ripens from the outside in, giving it a lighter, crumbly centre and a darker, softer rind; the flavour is sharp and distinctly low in fat. It is eaten cold, with onion and vinegar, or cooked into traditional Tyrolean dishes.
