Belgrade Fortress rises on a ridge above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube and represents the historic core of the city, with layers ranging from the Roman and Byzantine to the Ottoman and Austrian periods. Surrounding it is Kalemegdan, the largest city park, with promenades, viewpoints over the rivers, and museums. From the ramparts, a wide view opens over the confluence of the two rivers, especially at sunset.
The Temple of Saint Sava on Vračar is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, built during the 20th century on the site where the relics of Saint Sava were burned. Its monumental dome and marble interior adorned with mosaics make it one of the most recognizable symbols of Belgrade.
The National Museum of Serbia on Republic Square is the oldest and largest museum in the country, with collections spanning from prehistory and antiquity to Serbian and European art. Among the most famous works is the Miroslav Gospel. In front of the museum stands a monument to Prince Mihailo, the central gathering point in the city.
Avala is a forested mountain south of Belgrade, known for the Avala Tower with its observation deck and the Monument to the Unknown Hero, a work by sculptor Ivan Meštrović.
