This Gothic cathedral built from pink Vosges sandstone is one of the most significant medieval structures in Europe and for centuries was the tallest in the world. It is recognizable by its single tower, richly decorated western facade, and the famous astronomical clock in the interior. From the tower platform, visitors enjoy views over the rooftops of the old city, the river, and the surrounding plain, while the cathedral dominates the skyline of Strasbourg.
Grande Île is the historic core of Strasbourg, an island bordered by branches of the Ill River, and the first urban center as a whole to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It features a cathedral, squares, medieval and Renaissance houses, and a network of narrow streets. The compact and flat historic core is easy to explore on foot, while bridges and quays connect the various parts of the old town.
La Petite France is the most picturesque part of the old town, a former quarter of tanners, millers, and fishermen along the channels of the Ill River. Rows of half-timbered houses with steep roofs and flower-filled windows are reflected in the canals, and the narrow streets and small bridges make it one of the most photographed parts of Strasbourg. Cafes and restaurants line the waterfront, making it a pleasant place for a stroll at any time of day.
