Everything you need for Tinos in one place
One of the holiest Orthodox churches in Greece, known for the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary discovered in 1823. Every year on August 15th, thousands of pilgrims come to the island, many crawling on their knees to the church entrance along the marble path that leads from the port to the church. Within the complex there is also a museum with offerings from the faithful and historical artifacts.
Pyrgos is a mountain village in the northwest of Tinos, the birthplace of many prominent Greek sculptors of the 19th and 20th centuries. The streets are paved with marble, and the Museum of Sculptors and the Museum of Marble showcase the island's centuries-old tradition of stone carving. A visit to the studios and the old cemetery, adorned with exceptional marble sculptures, offers insight into the unique artisan identity of Tinos.
At the top of a 643 m high rock stand the remains of a Venetian fortress, which served as the administrative center of Tinos until 1715. A walking trail leads to the fortress, and the ascent takes about 30 minutes. From the summit, there is a view of a large part of the Cyclades, while at the foot of the rock lie traditional villages with stone houses and churches.
Pyrgos is the center of Tinos marble craftsmanship — workshops and a small sculpture museum are still active, and the village alleyways look like an open-air atelier.
