Ulcinj is the southernmost coastal city in Montenegro, recognizable for its Old Town perched on a rock above the sea, long sandy beaches, and a blend of Mediterranean and Oriental heritage. Its history spans more than two millennia, and traces of different eras can be seen in the walls, stone houses, churches, and mosques. Unlike most of the Montenegrin coast, Ulcinj is not just a city to pass through: Velika plaža, Ada Bojana, Solana, and the surrounding lakes make it an excellent base for several completely different days.

The fortified old town perched on a cliff above the sea dates back to the Illyrian and Byzantine periods, and was subsequently under Venetian and Ottoman rule. Within its walls stand a mosque, churches, and a small museum documenting the turbulent history of this pirate stronghold. Narrow cobblestone alleyways lead to terraces with sea views.
The Museum of Ulcinj is located within the Old Town and presents the long history of Ulcinj and its surroundings through archaeological, historical, and ethnographic materials. The collections include artifacts from various eras, from the ancient period to the time of Venetian and Ottoman rule. Due to its position within the walls, it naturally fits into a tour of the Old Town and provides context for the buildings and cultural influences you encounter during your walk.
Balšić Palace is located within the walls of the Old Town and is part of a historical complex that bears witness to the medieval period of Ulcinj and the era of Balšić rule. The stone structures are integrated into the dense Old Town core, and the position high above the sea gives this part of the city a particularly striking atmosphere. It is best visited together with the rest of the Old Town and the Ulcinj Museum, as the historical layers here build upon one another.
Ada Bojana is located at the far south of the Montenegrin coast, at the mouth of the Bojana River into the Adriatic Sea.
