Eisenstadt

The capital of Burgenland, roughly twenty kilometres from Rust, with the Esterházy family palace at its centre. Inside the palace is the Haydnsaal, a concert hall where the composer spent decades working as the family's Kapellmeister; elsewhere in town stands the house where he lived, and up on the hill a church contains his mausoleum. Add to that a pedestrianised town centre with cafés, and the excursion easily fills half a day.
