Antigonea — ancient city

Antigonea — ancient city

Antigonea is an ancient city on a hill east of Gjirokaster, founded in the 3rd century BC by the Epirean king Pyrrhus and named after his wife. Today it is an archaeological park with the remains of city walls, an agora, houses with floor mosaics, and early Christian basilicas, offering a sweeping view over the Drino river valley. This peaceful site provides insight into the Hellenistic period of the region, far from the bustle of the city.
