Augusta Raurica

Augusta Raurica

Augusta Raurica is a Roman archaeological site on the southern bank of the Rhine, around 20 km east of Basel, near the villages of Augst and Kaiseraugst. The settlement was founded in approximately 44 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus. The open-air archaeological park encompasses more than 20 monuments, including a Roman theatre. The Roman Museum houses a reconstruction of a Roman house and the Kaiseraugst Silver Treasure, discovered in 1961–1962. From Basel, the site is reached by train to Kaiseraugst station, from where the remainder of the journey is on foot.
