A national park in the German Alps, about 30 km south of Salzburg (across the Austrian-German border). The main attraction is Königssee — an emerald alpine lake surrounded by steep mountain peaks rising over 2000 m. Electric boats (the only permitted transport on the lake — to protect the ecosystem) take visitors to the church of St. Bartholomew on a peninsula, recognizable by its red onion-shaped domes. Above the lake is Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) — a historical site from the Nazi era, today a restaurant with panoramic views. Direct bus 840 from the center of Salzburg runs approximately 50 minutes to Berchtesgaden, plus bus 841 to the lake docks.
