About 40 km south of Civita lies one of the most unusual Renaissance gardens in Italy — Sacro Bosco in Bomarzo, also known as the 'Garden of Monsters'. Giant sculptures from the 16th century (dragons, elephants, a tilted house) are carved directly into the rock and scattered throughout a woodland park that can be explored independently.
