Montepulciano is 14 km from Pienza, easily reached by car in 20 minutes. The old town climbs along one main street up to Piazza Grande — along the way are cantinas where you can taste Vino Nobile directly from the barrels. The afternoon is free for a walk along the ramparts and views over Val d'Orcia.
