UNESCO-protected wine region in the Douro river valley — the oldest demarcated wine region in the world (since 1756). Steep vineyard terraces descend toward the river, while stone quintas (wine estates) offer tastings of Port wine and Douro red wines. The main bases for visiting are Peso da Régua and Pinhão. The most beautiful way to arrive is by train (Douro line) along the river — one of the most scenic railway routes in Europe. Alternatively, boat tours from Porto (full day).
