El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen

The royal monastery of El Escorial, dating from the 16th century, served as the residence of Spanish rulers and today houses the mausoleum of several generations of the royal family. Nearby is the Valley of the Fallen, a monumental complex featuring a large cross erected in the mountain landscape of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Both sites can be visited on a day trip from Madrid.
