Take the ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta on the mainland (just 6 minutes), then travel by car or bus about an hour to Monemvasia — a Byzantine fortress built on a rock rising directly from the sea. Entry to the fortress is free; inside you will find cafes and churches, while the Kastro quarter at the top offers a panoramic view of the Laconian Gulf. A realistic return before sunset is possible.
