One of the largest and most magnificent French royal châteaux, located in the town of the same name 55 km southeast of Paris. Used by all French monarchs from the 12th century through Napoleon III — including Napoleon I, who recognized it as 'the house of centuries'. The interior rooms are spectacular, especially the Gallery of Francis I, the ballroom, and Napoleon's private apartments. The château is surrounded by a large park with French and English gardens and the Fontainebleau Forest — a popular destination for hiking and cycling. Train from Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau-Avon station takes approximately 40 minutes.
