Lakes Silvaplana and Sils

The Upper Engadine lakes — Champfèr, Silvaplana, and Sils — stretch one after another to the south-west of St. Moritz, all the way to Maloja. In winter, when the lakes are frozen over, an official lake trail is marked out from St. Moritz Bad to Maloja, covering around 17 km; skaters may step onto the ice only where the route is marked with pink poles, and the return journey is made by Engadine bus. In Sils stands the house where Friedrich Nietzsche spent six summers between 1883 and 1888, now a museum open seasonally. From Sils, horse-drawn carriage rides also depart into the Val Fex valley, which is closed to motor vehicles.
