Lake Braies

Lake Braies (Pragser Wildsee) is an emerald-coloured mountain lake nestled beneath the sheer cliffs of Seekofel, and one of the most photographed spots in the Dolomites. The trail around the lake is easy, winding through forest and along the shore; the full circuit takes a couple of hours, with ever-changing views of the water and the mountains. In winter, when the lake is often frozen and blanketed in snow, it takes on an entirely different atmosphere — quiet and almost ceremonial. During peak season, vehicle access is restricted, so check the entry rules before you set off.
