Zalongo Monument and Monastery

On a steep cliff above the Epirus plain stands the Zalongo monastery and a monumental sculpture commemorating the women who in 1803 leaped from the cliff rather than surrender. The view from the top takes in the Ambracian Gulf and the mountain range beyond. The climb is demanding — hundreds of steps — but the location is extraordinary.
