Mantova is about 45 km from Verona, easily reachable by train in under an hour. The city center is UNESCO-protected — Palazzo Ducale, Basilica di Sant'Andrea, and the lakes surrounding the city make it an excellent full-day destination. The last train back departs late in the evening, so no organized tour is necessary.
