This small Herzegovinian town has become one of the most famous Catholic pilgrimage destinations in Europe following the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary to a group of young people in the early 1980s (the first apparition on June 24, 1981). Today it is visited by millions of believers from around the world who tour St. James Church (where daily masses are held in multiple languages), Apparition Hill (Podbrdo, where the Virgin Mary is believed to have first appeared) and Križevac (the mountain with a cross, a 4 km walk through the Stations of the Cross). Even for travelers who are not on a religious journey, Međugorje offers an interesting insight into the contemporary history and significance of this place for the region. It is located approximately 30 km south of Mostar. A bus from Mostar runs several times a day (approximately 45 minutes), and guided tours are also available.
