Monte Piana — Open-Air Museum of the First World War

Monte Piana — Open-Air Museum of the First World War

The flat summit of Monte Piana was bisected by the front line during the First World War: the northern peak was held by Austro-Hungarian forces, the southern by the Italian army. Trenches, gun positions, tunnels and fortifications survive to this day as an open-air museum, explored along a circular historical trail. From the summit there are sweeping views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Monte Cristallo and Lake Misurina. The museum is reached from the direction of Misurina, either on foot or, during the warmer months, by transport to the mountain hut below the summit; entering the tunnels requires caution and a torch.
