Murten

Murten

Murten is a bilingual small town on Lake Murten, in the canton of Fribourg, founded in the 12th century by the Dukes of Zähringen. In 1476, beneath its walls, the Swiss Confederates defeated the Burgundian army of Charles the Bold. The almost entirely intact city wall, with its several towers and gates, is open to walkers in all weather, every day from sunrise to sunset. The wall is closed only during carnival season and the local festival of Solenité, for safety reasons. Below the wall lies the Old Town with its arcades, while down by the lake there is a promenade and spots for swimming. Half a day is enough to walk the walls, explore the Old Town, and stroll along the shore.
