Two ancient Roman cities buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD offer a unique insight into the daily life of ancient Rome. Pompeii is the larger and more famous site, with well-preserved streets, frescoes and an amphitheatre, while Herculaneum is smaller but even better preserved and less visited.
