Sand in Taufers: Taufers Castle and the Reinbach Waterfalls

North of Brunico, at the entrance to the Ahrntal valley, the medieval Taufers Castle rises above the town of Sand in Taufers, with its well-preserved chambers, chapel, and towers. Nearby, the Reinbach stream, which descends from the peaks of the Rieserferner group, plunges into three waterfalls, two of which are around forty metres high. The St Francis hiking trail follows the stream up to the falls, and the return journey connects easily with a visit to the castle, making for a full day's outing.
