Thun and Lake Thun

Thun is a city situated where the River Aare flows out of Lake Thun, in the same canton as Bern. Above the Old Town stands Thun Castle, whose main tower was built around 1200; it houses a museum with a medieval knights' hall, and from the tower there are views over the city, the lake, and the Alps. Obere Hauptgasse is notable for its pavements raised above street level. On the lakeshore sits Oberhofen Castle, a museum where the rooms are furnished just as they were lived in by the last owners, set within an English-style park. Both castles operate seasonally, so check their opening hours before you set out. Thun is reached from Bern by train; check the timetable for connections to Oberhofen on the day of your visit.
