Byzantine Fortress City of Mystras

The UNESCO site of Mystras is one of the most significant monuments of late Byzantine civilization in Greece. Situated on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, the city was for centuries the political and cultural center of the Despotate of Morea. Visitors can explore the remains of the Despot's palace, monasteries, churches with preserved frescoes, and medieval streets that climb up the hillside. Thanks to its exceptionally well-preserved architecture and panoramic views over the Sparta valley, Mystras represents one of the most rewarding day trips from Gythio.
