The most famous beach of Porto — a large sandy beach in the Matosinhos suburb, about 8 km north of Porto city center. Metro line A runs directly from the center (Mercado station). The beach is popular for swimming (with a caveat — the Atlantic is cold and has strong waves), surf schools, and families. Atlas Surfing and Porto Surf School organize beginner courses. A local restaurant scene with fresh fish and seafood specialties — Matosinhos is known for its grilled sardines.
