Castello Ursino

A medieval fortress from the 13th century, built on the orders of Emperor Frederick II, today serves as the seat of the City Museum of Catania. The museum holds Greek and Roman artifacts, Sicilian paintings, and a numismatic collection. The fortress survived the eruption of Etna in 1669, after which the coastline shifted, so today it stands farther from the sea than it did at the time of its construction.
