Basilica Cistern

Basilica Cistern

The largest and most famous of the hundreds of Byzantine cisterns beneath Istanbul, built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian I. A forest of 336 marble columns, including the famous Medusa heads, transforms this underground water reservoir into one of the most mystical and atmospheric spaces in the city. Today it ranks among the most visited landmarks in the historic heart of Istanbul.
