A historic church in the Monte district, situated in one of the highest parts above Funchal. It is known for its white facade, panoramic views of the city, and the tomb of the last Austrian Emperor Karl I. From the terrace in front of the church, there is a view of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean, and it is from here that the famous ride in traditional Madeiran toboggans down the steep streets of Monte begins.
Entrance to the church is free. A well-known pilgrimage church in the Monte district, accessible on foot or by cable car from Funchal.
