Church of Saint Sophia on the Rock

A Byzantine church from the 12th century, situated on the edge of a cliff in the upper town of Monemvasia. It was built in the likeness of the renowned Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, but on a considerably smaller scale. Over the centuries it changed its purpose, and some of the original frescoes and architectural details have been preserved to this day. Thanks to its position high above the sea, the church offers spectacular views of the Peloponnese coastline and the Aegean Sea, making it one of the most impressive landmarks of Monemvasia.
