Church of Saint Sofia

Church of Saint Sofia

The Church of Saint Sofia is the second oldest church in Sofia, built between the 4th and 6th centuries on the ruins of the Roman city of Serdica. The Bulgarian capital took its name from this church in the 14th century — before that, the city was known as Sredetz. The church has two levels: an upper basilica with a wooden structure and a lower level of archaeological excavations, which includes a Roman necropolis, mosaics, and medieval tombs. In front of the church stands the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. It is located directly next to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, making both landmarks easy to visit together.
