St Michael's Church and the White Tower

The parish church of St Michael stands to the north of the cathedral, separated from it by an old cemetery. Its Gothic bell tower, 72 metres tall, is known as the White Tower after its pale roof and, together with the cathedral's two spires, is the most recognisable symbol of the city. The four oriel windows just below the top once housed a town watchman who kept lookout for fires. The church's interior was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century.
