Church of Saint Spyridon

Church of Saint Spyridon

The Church of Saint Spyridon is the main parish church of the island of Elafonisos, located in the center of the island's only settlement, right next to the harbor. It was built in the 19th century in the traditional Cycladic style — with white walls and blue details — although the island geographically belongs to the Peloponnese. It is dedicated to Saint Spyridon of Tremithus, the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, who is especially venerated by the local population. It is characterized by a tower bell tower overlooking the harbor. Around the church there is a small square with cafes, which is the main gathering place for residents and the natural starting point for exploring the settlement.
