Church of St. Blaise

Church of St. Blaise

A Baroque church dedicated to the patron saint of Dubrovnik, built between 1706 and 1715 on the site of a late medieval church from 1348 that was destroyed by fire. It was designed by the Venetian architect and sculptor Marino Groppelli, and its facade with Corinthian columns and niches with sculptures of saints follows the Venetian Baroque style. The altar houses a Gothic silver statue of Saint Blaise holding in his hands a model of Dubrovnik as it looked before the devastating earthquake of 1667 — one of the rare surviving depictions of the city from that period.
