A network of Etruscan tunnels and caves carved into the tufa beneath Civita, over 2000 years old, originally used as tombs, cellars, and stables. Some of them are open for visits today and provide insight into Etruscan architecture and everyday life. Particularly impressive are the spacious chambers directly beneath the central square.
Most caves are visible during a city walk without a special ticket. Some private basement caves occasionally open for a nominal fee charged by local owners. Comfortable footwear is recommended due to uneven terrain.
