Franciscan Monastery

The Franciscans arrived in Bolzano in the 13th century, and their monastery, a few minutes' walk from Waltherplatz, remains one of the quietest spots in the city to this day. The Gothic church houses a carved winged altarpiece by master Hans Klocker, dating from around 1500, and considered one of the finest examples of late Gothic woodcarving in South Tyrol. Adjoining the church is a cloister with the remains of medieval frescoes — hushed and shaded, a striking contrast to the lively arcades nearby.
