Main Square

Main Square

One of the largest enclosed squares in Austria, covering around 13,200 square metres, surrounded by Baroque and Renaissance facades. At its centre stands the Trinity Column, carved from white marble and erected in the 18th century as a votive offering after outbreaks of plague, fire, and the threat of war. The tram to Pöstlingberg departs from the square, which also serves as a gateway down to the Danube and into the narrow streets of the old town.
