A complex of Byzantine monasteries and churches carved into the rock between the 10th and 12th centuries, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Within a relatively small area, several churches with well-preserved frescoes are nestled, among which Karanlık Kilise (the Dark Church) stands out in particular. It represents one of the most important historical sites of Cappadocia.
The museum ticket does not include the Dark Church — a separate fee of ~5 EUR applies. It is recommended to arrive early in the morning before tourist groups.
