The former cattle market at the foot of the castle features a cobblestone cross marking the site of the old gallows — more than a hundred Covenanters were executed here during the 17th century. Today the square is surrounded by pubs and restaurants, and can be reached by the Castle Wynd steps from the esplanade or via the colorful Victoria Street.
