The cemetery next to the 400-year-old Greyfriars Kirk attracts two types of visitors — those looking for the grave of Greyfriars Bobby (a Skye Terrier who reportedly guarded his owner's grave for years) and Harry Potter fans, as the gravestones here inspired J.K. Rowling to create characters such as McGonagall and Riddle. Among the graves stand mortsafe metal cages from the 1800s, placed to prevent the theft of corpses.
