Alpinists' Cemetery

Alpinists' Cemetery

The Alpinists' Cemetery is the resting place of around 50 climbers who perished in the mountains surrounding Zermatt, most of them during the 19th century. The inscriptions on the gravestones mention the Matterhorn, Täschhorn, Weisshorn, Liskamm, and the Monte Rosa massif, and some record the cause of death: an avalanche, a rockfall, or a crevasse in the glacier. Buried here are the guides Peter Taugwalder father and son, who led Edward Whymper on his ascent, as well as the guide Michel-Auguste Croz, who lost his life during the descent from the Matterhorn in 1865.
