Cold War Tunnel

Cold War Tunnel

The Cold War Tunnel is an underground shelter from the communist period, dug beneath the center of Gjirokastër in case of war or attack. The network of concrete corridors and rooms was intended to protect city authorities, and today it is open for tours, bearing witness to the atmosphere of fear and isolation during Hoxha's dictatorship. The tunnel is a completely different experience from the stone towers and bazaars — a layer of the 20th century beneath a medieval city.
