The central square of old Vlorë (Sheshi i Flamurit / Flag Square), dominated by an impressive socialist realist monument to Albanian independence from 1912. Next to the monument stands the spot where the Albanian flag was raised for the first time on November 28, 1912 — today marked by a modest concrete statue featuring a double-headed eagle. At the northern end of the square is the tomb of Ismail Qemali, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the first Prime Minister of Albania. Most beautiful in the early evening when the monuments are illuminated.
Public square with free access, open throughout the day. Ideal place for a walk and sightseeing in the central part of Vlorë.
