Chapel of Saint Peter on the Kofel

Chapel of Saint Peter on the Kofel

The small Chapel of Saint Peter on the Kofel, nestled in the forest above the hamlet of Aufkirchen, is the oldest shrine in the Upper Puster Valley: it is first mentioned in 1329, and local tradition holds that priests fleeing the Roman town of Aguntum near Lienz took refuge here during the Migration Period. A meditation path leads to it from the pilgrimage church in Aufkirchen, marked by stations consisting of granite blocks and bronze reliefs depicting scenes from the life of the Apostle Peter. The ascent through the forest is moderate. On the day of the winter solstice, at exactly noon, a shaft of light falls through a window in the south wall directly onto the altar.
