St. Alban Gate and the Leci Wall

St. Alban Gate (St. Alban-Tor), which the people of Basel call 'Dalbedor' (Dalbedoor), is one of three surviving gates of the outer ring of city walls, built after the great earthquake of 1356. The passageway retains its large wooden doors and a heavy portcullis made of individual beams, which were lowered in times of danger to seal the entrance to the city. Unlike the other gates, this site also allows visitors to trace the line of the wall itself: markers on the ground lead from the gate to the Letzimauer on the Mühlegraben, the last surviving section of the outer wall. Remnants of the fortifications are also visible on the hillside. The gate leads into the St. Alban quarter, with its narrow, winding streets.
