Carouge

Carouge

Carouge was planned in the late 18th century by the Kingdom of Sardinia as an independent city on the left bank of the River Arve, intended to rival Geneva. Royal charters of 1786 elevated it to the status of a royal city, and under the Treaty of Turin in 1816 it was annexed to Geneva. Its grid-pattern streets, two-storey houses, and green inner courtyard gardens are part of Switzerland's national cultural heritage. The heart of the district is the Place du Marché, home to a market with a history spanning more than three centuries, while the neighbouring Rue Saint-Joseph is lined with goldsmiths' workshops and galleries.
