Charnel House of St. Michael's Church

The charnel house beside St. Michael's Church is known for its collection of more than 1,200 hand-painted skulls belonging to residents of Hallstatt. Due to limited space in the local cemetery, remains were transferred to the charnel house over the centuries, with skulls decorated with names, dates, and floral motifs. Today it stands as one of the most unusual historical sites in Austria and a testament to local burial customs.
